We welcome Fr James Baptist to Bayside Catholic Mission as Assistant Parish Priest. Fr James Baptist was ordained at St Patrick's Cathedral last Saturday.

This third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday.

Gaudete means ‘rejoice” in Latin and is the first word of the introit or entrance antiphon with which the texts of the Mass begin.

As the priest enters the sanctuary the Church proclaims, Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete. Dominus enim prope est.- “Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say, Rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near” (Phil 4: 4-5). St Paul makes this exclamation to rejoice in his letter to the Philippians. The liturgical colour changes slightly from violet to rose as a visible sign of our rejoicing that the birth of the Lord is near.

The famous Advent hymn “O Come, O come, Emmanuel” presents seven attributes of Jesus mentioned in Sacred Scripture which the Church has used in the Liturgy of the Hours since ancient times. Also called the O Antiphons, they are, in fact, Magnificat antiphons used at Vespers of the last seven days of Advent in Western Catholicism. Since the reform of liturgy they are also now used as the alleluia verses on the same days at Holy Mass.

Rejoice, because Christmas is near at hand!

Message from The Pastors

Dear friends

We are pleased to welcome Fr James Baptist as our new Assistant Priest to the Bayside Mission. Fr James was ordained last Saturday and commenced with us on Wednesday. Fr James hails originally from Bentleigh. I know that you will make him welcome and he looks forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks.

Christmas Masses
The times for Christmas Masses and reconciliation are in the bulletin. Please note that we still must abide by the limits of the government restrictions in our churches (1 person per 2 sq metres) and record the details of all who enter the church. So it will still be necessary to book for Masses at Christmas, and we will need to limit numbers in our churches.

The bookings are now open on the TryBooking link at www.baysidecatholicmission.org so please register yourself and your family asap to avoid disappointment.

We are unable to pass around the collection plates at Mass yet, so these will be at the doors of the church, clearly marked for Church and presbytery accounts. Thank you for your continued
generosity in what has been a challenging year for our parishes. Some communities are beginning to introduce cashless options for contributions on site.

This coming week I will be moving to St James presbytery where Fr James Baptist and Dominic (our seminarian) and I will be living. Fr Dean will remain at St Mary's, and the presbytery at St Joan of Arc will begin the transition to the administration hub for the Mission.

Whilst this year feels different to any other year preparing for Christmas, the Liturgy of this weekend reminds us that God is near to us. We light the rose candle and rejoice because the Lord is near, indeed the Lord is with us always.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support, they are much appreciated.

Father David Cartwright
Moderator, Bayside Mission

Thank you for your support which has, over the years, made it possible to fund many projects for disadvantaged people in Papua New Guinea, Peru, West Africa, Pakistan, Palestine and the many Islands in the Pacific.

Some $200,000 has been provided in clean water, health, education and improved living stands to people who would not otherwise have had this opportunity over the last year. This is especially in the areas of MOM activity, where the effect of the pandemic has been devastating.
