St Vincent de Paul Soup Van Christmas Hampers 2020

What a year it has been! At one stage we thought we might not be able to prepare Christmas hampers this year but as it turns out we can, and indeed the need is greater than ever. This is our 16th year and for the past 15 years we have prepared approx. 250 hampers each year. This year we have been asked to prepare 605 hampers for Boarding House residents visited by the St Vincent de Paul Soup Van in North Melbourne and Fitzroy along with a number of gift packs for rough sleepers and local families in need. Contents, shopping, packing and delivery will look quite a bit different due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Items we would like to include in the hampers are as follows:

- towel, hand towel, face washer, pillow case
- toiletries including toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap (packaged, not loose), deodorant
- food items: SVDP have confirmed we are able to include packaged food items that are Christmassy e.g. Christmas chocolates or Christmas shortbreads
- clothing: socks (particular in need for rough sleepers)
- nice Christmas gift e.g. notebook, pen, sudoku puzzle, crossword puzzle

A special collection was taken up last weekend, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed. A total of $752 was received.

Monetary donations can also be made directly to the Soup Van Christmas Hamper Bank Account

Name: Nazareth Catholic Parish Ricketts Point (Christmas Hamper Account)

Account Number

We will pack hampers this year on Saturday 12th December in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) at Stella Maris, Charlotte Rd Beaumaris, and St Vincent de Paul will pick them up Sunday 13 December for delivery with the food parcels that week.

Please note due to COVID restrictions there is a limit on how many people are allowed in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) at any one time so if you would like to help pack can you please register your name by calling or emailing Maree Clark by Friday 11th December. Maree’s contact details are: [email protected], mobile 0412-115-116. Helpers need to be 15 years old or above and anyone under 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or carer. There will be three shifts: 11:00am - 1:00pm, 1:00pm - 3:00pm and 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Please note you can register for all three shifts if we have not reached the maximum number of people allowed for those time slots.

It has been a tough year but if you can support the hampers in any way it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Working with Children Check

Children's Week Activity: "Just as I have loved you"

How to participate

To celebrate Children’s Week this year, we are inviting all children and young people (from the ages of 4 years to 17) to participate in an activity. We want you to share with us what the words “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34) mean to you through a drawing or artwork (mixed media).

Entries should include the completed submission form and can be sent to [email protected] before 5pm on 18 December 2020. (Parents are welcome to answer the question on behalf of their child/ren if they are too young to do so.) For more information please visit https://melbournecatholic.org/news/celebrating-childrens-week-2020

It is important to note that this is not a competition, but a reflection and an opportunity for adults to hear the voice of our young ones. Those who participate will be invited to an online gathering with Archbishop Peter A Comensoli following the activity.

The Spirituality of Advent

After such a tumultuous year the coming of Advent and Christmas seems to me slightly out of step or time. Still Advent is the start of a new liturgical year and a chance to begin again. I am really going to appreciate a new start this year, gladly leaving the old year behind and refocusing on new.

Starting Advent when we are finally coming together in large numbers into the church offers a wonderful opportunity to really focus on preparing for Christmas. It is like after a long drought you can finally drink in the sweetness of being at Mass, receiving the sacraments and meeting friends. And to top it off we are preparing for one of our favourite seasons! The question is though, how do we do a good Advent and prepare well for christmas?

Formed.org - 'A Road to Bethlehem' daily reflections and enrichment program is one program that can help you prepare well. It has short daily reflections and as well as talks on advent and the scriptures for this season. Click on the link to see it. If you are not signed up to Formed.org yet don't forget you can do so for free via our parish.

A Journey from Eden to Bethlehem - An Advent Pilgrimage

Would you like an inspiring 30min talk every day to help you through Advent? The Australian based Parousia media is providing us with just by hosting an online pilgrimage through Advent. It is a free event and each day a great local or international speaker will help you with talks from Creation through the story of salvation to the prophet St John the Baptist. It finishes with a Mexican tradition called the Posadas Novena, a nine day novena before christmas . You can watch the event anytime you like through any device.

Their previous pilgrimages have been attended by tens of thousands of people from around the world. It is a wonderful way to prepare for the coming of Jesus by increasing our knowledge and experience of our faith. You can register at any time, just follow the link below.

Melbourne Overseas Mission Annual Appeal - 12th and 13th December 2020

Thank you for your support which has, over the years, made it possible to fund many projects for disadvantaged people in Papua New Guinea, Peru, West Africa, Pakistan, Palestine and the many Islands in the Pacific.

Some $200,000 has been provided in clean water, health, education and improved living stands to people who would not otherwise have had this opportunity over the last year. This is especially in the areas of MOM activity, where the effect of the pandemic has been devastating.

Please visit https://mom.org.au for more information or to donate

Youth Ministry

During our recent Bayside Catholic Mission meeting it was decided to implement a youth ministry across all the bayside churches.

The youth ministry will aim to build courageous and resilient young people with the clear objective to be seen as service oriented youth driven by charity.

We are seeking committed parishioners to assist in further developing this concept with the view to bring our youth closer to Christ and to learn new skills in a post pandemic era that can be used in service to others. We will be issuing further information in the coming weeks and will be inviting expressions of interest for commitment of parishioners to support the program.

Youth activities include but not limited to developing a music ministry, cooking activities, social gatherings, small business projects, bible study with worship and outreach. Please consider whether this important project within the Bayside Catholic Mission is one that aligns with your passions and talents.

Further details and an Expression of Interest (EOI) will be issued in the coming weeks.

If you are interested in being part of this vision and would like more information please email Kevin Dsouza [email protected] or Michael Staunton [email protected]
